Festival of Social Science event - March 2010
March 19th, 2010
The Sus-IT team participated in the Festival of Social Science week by organising an event for residents from across the borough of Erewash over the age of 50 to come along to find out about the benefits of engaging with digital technologies as well information about how to access services in their local area. Representatives from organisations such as NHS, Police, Neighbourhood Watch, Community Concern Erewash, Erewash Borough Council, Age UK and the 50+ forum for Long Eaton and Ilkeston were present on the day along with five of the Sus-IT research participants, who told about their personal journeys of digital engagement.

'Sandpit' event at Dundee
October 2009
The first of four 'sandpit' events was held on 30th September - 1st October 2009 at the University of Dundee. The event was a theatre-based participatory design event in which groups of older people were invited to comment on a series of scenarios that were professionally scripted and acted. The scenarios were about older people using 'Infolink', a fictitious computer designed with the needs of older people in mind. The group also participated in a 'design workshop' building on the ideas explored.
Development of 'critical friends'
August 2009
The project participants are now able to benefit from a valuable group of older people known as the 'Critical Friends' who are available to offer their comments and feedback on the work that the Sus-IT project is doing. The friends are made up of volunteers from the older people who have participated in earlier stages of the research, and they have already had input into the development of our digital engagement questionnaire, some of our publicity materials, and into the plans for our research into older people's ICT learning and education needs and strategies. The consultation exercises were hosted by Nottingham Trent University.
Participatory methods workshop held
June 2009
Participation of older people is central to the work of Sus-IT. A one day workshop was organised on 16th June 2009 to explore approaches to participation and some of the different participatory methods. The Participatory Vulnerability Analysis method was explored in detail. The workshop which was attended by almost all the research staff and students working on the project, was held at Loughborough University.
First project workshop launches Sus-IT
February 2009
The work of the Sus-IT project began in earnest with the gathering of all project participants for an introductory workshop. The event was held on 4-5th February 2009 at Loughborough University. Despite the best efforts of the weather (heavy snow threatened to call a halt to proceedings) the workshop was a great success, and attendees had the opportunity to share their visions and make plans for the future work of the Sus-IT project.
Sus-IT project receives funding from NDA
October 2008
We are delighted to announce that the Sus-IT project has been chosen as one of only a few research projects to receive funding under the New Dynamics of Ageing programme. The total value of the award is £1.2 million. Principal Investigator Leela Damodaran says, "We are thrilled that after the efforts that we put into creating an multidisciplinary team capable of working together so effectively, we will be able to take this work forwards for the benefit of older people."
